MNS vs BACHCHAN

MUMBAI: Apologising for his wife's remarks that were deemed anti-Maharashtrian by some political parties, actor Amitabh Bachchan on Wednesday said he and his family members were willing to face any punishment if found guilty. ( Watch )

"I do not think we have said or done anything negative but we will leave it to the state," he told a news conference here.

"We will wait for the investigation report and I am prepared to go to jail if I have committed a crime. If after our apology the matter still persists it becomes a problem of law and order, it is for the administration to take care," the actor said.

"I have already apologised and expressed regret. The matter has now reached the state level," Bachchan said. ( Watch )

Deputy Home Minister R R Patil has said they will investigate what Jaya has said, he said.

The actor said he and his wife had already expressed regret for the comments and apologised for them.

Bachchan also said that he had no problem with MNS chief Raj Thackeray and termed as "friend" the leader who said his party would not allow the release of any films starring members of the Bachchan family for Jaya's alleged anti-Marathi remarks.

Asked if he would meet Raj, the actor said, "He has given me enough respect and I would like to give him the same respect."

Bachchan, whose film The Last Lear releases on Friday, had expressed his apology on his blog as well on Wednesday. ( Watch )

Bachchan also said he did not expect an apology from Raj for his comments against his wife.

"I expect nothing. We are a peace-loving family," he said.

THE N-DEAL

NEW DELHI: China has denied attempting to block an exemption for India at the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) meeting in Vienna.

After days of protracted negotiations, the NSG lifted the sanctions on India, freeing it to buy nuclear material and technology from its 45 members.

“I am surprised by these reports. Facts speak louder than words. China has always worked responsibly towards consensus both in the International Atomic Energy Agency and the NSG,” visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said through a Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson.

Some media reports from Vienna spoke of Chinese opposition to an exemption to India from the NSG guidelines.

Mr. Yang arrived here on Monday afternoon from Kolkata. He was closeted in talks with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee after which he attended a dinner in his honour.

Mr. Yang also called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Separately, Mr. Mukherjee said India would wait for the ratification of the 123 Agreement by the United States Congress before entering into bilateral agreements with other supplier countries.

His observation follows Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s appeal to India not to “disadvantage” American companies if Congress is unable to approve the 123 Agreement.

“The approval by the Board of Governors of the IAEA for the India-specific safeguards agreement and the NSG waiver are the passports to enter into international nuclear trade. As far as the procedure is concerned, we shall have to wait for the ratification of the 123 Agreement,” Mr. Mukherjee said
