TEST OF BIG ATOM SMASHER

By ALEXANDER G. HIGGINS – 29 minutes ago

GENEVA (AP) — A small blip on a computer screen sent champagne corks popping among physicists in Switzerland. Near Chicago, researchers at a "pajama party" who watched via satellite let out an early morning cheer.

The blip was literally of cosmic proportions, representing a new tool to probe the birth of the universe.

The world's largest atom smasher passed its first test Wednesday as scientists said their powerful tool is almost ready to reveal how the tiniest particles were first created after the "big bang," which many theorize was the massive explosion that formed the stars, planets and everything.

Rivals and friends turned out in the wee hours at Fermilab in Batavia, Ill., in pajamas to watch the event by a special satellite connection. Joining in from around the world were other physicists — many of whom may one day work on the new Large Hadron Collider.

Tension mounted in the five control rooms at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, as scientists huddled around computer screens. After a few trial runs, they fired a beam of protons clockwise around the 17-mile tunnel of the collider deep under the rolling fields along the Swiss-French border. Then they succeeded in sending another beam in the opposite, counterclockwise direction.

The physicists celebrated with champagne when the white dots flashed on the blue screens of the control room, showing a successful crossing of the finish line on the $10 billion machine under planning since 1984.

"The first technical challenge has been met," said a jubilant Robert Aymar, director-general of CERN. "What you have just seen is the result of 20 years of effort. It all went like clockwork. Now it's for the physicists to show us what they can do.

"They are ready to go for discoveries," Aymar said. "Man has always shown he wants to know where he comes from and where he will go, where the universe comes from and where it will go. So here we're looking at essential questions for mankind."

The beams will gradually be filled with more protons and fired at near the speed of light in opposite directions around the tunnel, making 11,000 circuits a second. They will travel down the middle of two tubes about the width of fire hoses, speeding through a vacuum that is colder than outer space. At four points in the tunnel, the scientist will use giant magnets to cross the beams and cause protons to collide. The collider's two largest detectors — essentially huge digital cameras weighing thousands of tons — are capable of taking millions of snapshots a second.

It is likely to be several weeks before the first significant collisions.

The CERN experiments could reveal more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of a hypothetical particle — the Higgs boson — which is sometimes called the "God particle" because it is believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe.

Smaller colliders have been used for decades to study the makeup of the atom. Scientists once thought protons and neutrons were the smallest components of an atom's nucleus, but experiments have shown that protons and neutrons are made of quarks and gluons and that there are other forces and particles.

The LHC provides much greater power than earlier colliders.

Its start came over the objections of some who feared the collision of protons could eventually imperil the Earth by creating micro black holes — subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars.

"It's nonsense," said James Gillies, chief spokesman for CERN, which also received support for the project by leading scientists such as Britain's Stephen Hawking.

Gillies said the only risk would be if a beam at full power were to go out of control, and that would only damage the accelerator itself and burrow into the rock around the tunnel. No one would be endangered because the tunnel is evacuated when beams are being fired.

No such problem occurred Wednesday, although the accelerator is still probably a year away from full power.

The project organized by the 20 European member nations of CERN has attracted researchers from 80 nations. Some 1,200 are from the United States, an observer country that contributed $531 million. Japan, Canada, Russia and India — also observers — are other major contributors.

Some scientists have been waiting for 20 years to use the LHC.

The complexity of manufacturing it required groundbreaking advances in the use of supercooled, superconducting equipment. The 2001 start and 2005 completion dates were pushed back by two years each, and the cost of the construction was 25 percent higher than originally budgeted in 1996, said Luciano Maiani, who was CERN director-general at the time.

Maiani and the other three former directors-general attended Wednesday's experiment.

THE REALITY BITES-BOUNCE BACK OF INDIAN IT JOB MARKET
 by-Samir Das Mohapatra -CMC   Ltd.-BALASORE-ORISSA-INDIA

The software services outsourcing industry in India has become a highly visible node of the global economy over the last few years. Often regarded as the leading edge of India’s economic growth during the period of liberalisation and globalisation, it has grown up rapidly from small beginnings in the 1980s.IT (information technology) has also become the career option of choice for many young educated ITans, for whom the industry offers salaries unknown in other sectors plus the opportunity to live and work outside of India. IT professionals who is threatening American and European.  Software engineers and others employed in India’s IT industry can be seen as a new ‘knowledge’ workforce that caters to the global ‘informational economy’. As Related to IT before 2003 Indian Technology lives like a small insects over the world as compare with other developed countries like (US, , CHINA,JAPAN etc). Now the stage of Indian technology brings the INDIA fare a way from the other countries i.e. a huge gape between these countries.
WHY INIDAN PROFESSIONALS MOVE TOWARDS  EUROPE AND WHY THEY WANT TO BACK INDIA
Indian software Professionals in Europe can be divided into four major categories, based primarily on the basis of the type of employer or contract:
1) Bodyshops n bodyshopping arrangements, engineers are sent by consultant companies(Located in India and/or abroad) to work on projects for clients for specific periods of time. In this model, Indian engineers work only ‘onsite’, along with direct employees of the customer: there is no ‘offshore’ component. While the employment conditions, compensation, and nature of contract are determined by the consultant, the actual work is managed by the customer. The Indian engineers are employees of the contracting Indian company, with whom they have signed a contract to work at a specified hourly rate.
Note: - It is very tedious to work at Europe.
2) Indian software services outsourcing companies
Employees of large software services companies such as TCS, Infosys and HCL are in a very different position from those who were bodyshopped. These software engineers have secure jobs based in India and are sent to client sites abroad for assignments of short to long duration. Although these engineers are working at the client site, the projects are managed primarily by the Indian service provider rather than directly by the customer. While employees of Indian services companies usually have little choice about their onsite assignments, generally they are happy to take them up because it is a good opportunity to make extra money as well as to travel abroad. Some Indian software companies continue to pay the Indian salary while providing a living allowance in the local currency, while others provide a purely Euros salary (this depends on the length of the contract). Although employees are usually able to save a lot of money by going onsite, these assignments may come with onerous working conditions. Employees may be made to sign a bond or surety stipulating that they will not quit their company to join the client, and that on completion of the assignment they will continue to work for the company in India for at least six months. If they break this contract they are supposed to pay a hefty fine amounting to what they earned while at the client site, or up to three years’ salary.

Note: - Now Indian Technological firm give the better chances to the IT Professional to work and develop inside India. With out any risk.
Due to these reasons the Indian professionals are back to India for better chances.
Global experience seems essential in the Info-Tech industry and there's no better place than India to get it. India today offers the best of both worlds.
ndian demand for IT professionals is expected to rise from 3.40 lakh in 2000 to eight lakh in 2005, according to a paper on Human Resource for Knowledge Economy. Against this demand, the technological institutions will train only 1.65 lakh by 2002. In the keynote address at Nasscom-2001, Dr Arun Netravali, President, Bell Labs, said that 12 per cent of the information scientists worldwide are of Indian Origin.  So why the Indian scientist are move to wards outside to get better chances? The 2005 onwards, Indian Technology gives the best solution that all the Indian IT professionals work in there native place.

Q. Why are software professionals returning to India?

Ans. Because of layoffs in US/European companies and job insecurity. The rate at which Indian IT industry is still growing, and profits shown by major IT players in India, plans of Indian It firms to Venture into new undiscovered markets like Japan, China are few factors which portray India as attractive career destination.

Q. Who are  returning (i.e., number of Years of experience)?

Ans. The experience of the professionals starts from 2 yrs to senior positions whose experiences range from 4 to 12 yrs. The major chunk is of the professionals with 2-5 years of experience. The professionals with more than 6 years of experience are well settled there, and not many of them are returning.

 Q. Are companies seeing an increasing flood of applications from returning Indians. If it does not impinge on your organisation's privacy policy, can you share informations on the broad number of applications you have received?
Ans.  According to the HR Manager of Europe/US:  we have seen an increasing flood of applications from returning Indians. 90 per cent of the profiles we receive are from returning Indians.

There are lot of professionals returning back to India, and net is flooded with their resumes. On average, the percentage increase is 30- 35%.

THE RELATED THEME OF THE "REALITY BITES"

The IT jobs have started in India from Bangalore and Chennai. You can safely say that these two cities were the entry point for this booming industry, which is now becoming increasing global. How is this explained? There are many factors which will give you the reasons for this phenomenon:

Bangalore and Chennai are extremely conducive for the IT industry because of the high concentration of IT professionals available there. The number of software colleges available in the south account for 1/3rd of all the software colleges in India. Bangalore is also known, for this purpose the Silicon Valley of India
One of the biggest incentive is that Government of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu States are quite dynamic and progressive due to which it is easy for the foreign investors to set up a base of auxiliary bases in India
The workforce (the IT professionals) comes at one-third to one-fourth of the wages that are paid to the same qualification personnel back in US; these limited salaries are still considered high by the local population providing a win-win situation which is highly conducive for the setting up of the business
The IT professionals of India prefer to remain in their own country when offered a good professional growth opportunity, instead of migrating to US. The trend today is actually reversing from 1997 when almost 30-40 percent of the qualified people preferred to leave the country for lucrative jobs in USA, now there is a reversal of the trend having more than 45 percent people wanting to return to India and start their own ventures or pursue careers which are now more satisfying and well paying than ever. The reversal of this trends is actually owed to the shift in bases of many developed countries who offer good career growth right in India
The professionals of Indian origin, particularly in computer field, are recognized all over the world as better than the best - which again allows for the win-win equation to establish itself
k India is now a lucrative base not only for software engineers but also for PhDs in the IT field who are wooed by foreign companies on their native land. There are leading companies which target the high-end educational background such as PhDs mostly for generating consultancies and for research and development, for which Indian is actually famous world-wide. The way things are unforlding, the consultancy and R&D industry could become a $17 billion industry by the end of 2008 according to NASSCOM McKinsey Report.
There are galaxy of world leaders which have migrated to India to join in the gravy wagon such as, British Telecom, Barclays Bank, Daimler-Chrysler, HSBC,Aventis, Honeywell could be providing job for approx 200,000 IT professionals in the course of the next couple of years. Not to mention the fact that India already has a good base of global organization already present in Bangalore-Chennai belt for the last decade or so - such as Citigroup, GE, British Airways, Amex, etc
Among the IT enabled services offered par excellence in Bangalore-Chennai and which is slowly moving towards other metros in the country are:
Accounting
Call centers
Bank transaction processes
Remote management (networks)
End-to-end processing services
Help-desks
Trouble-shooting and technical support
Product specific solutions, such as risk modeling, actuarial services, data mining, variation analysis, etc
Global business platforms
Telemarketing Internet based products and services for reducing costs
Customer interaction services
For those who seek jobs in these cities, all you have to do is land in the city of your choice and you will have a job within the week. The variety, the market and the availability of jobs being such, that you can have your pick. The work conditions are better than in any of the metros in the country - both infrastructure-wise as well as work culture wise. Since these industries have been exposed to continuous interaction with the USA and other foreign investors for the last decade or so, the people have imbibed sufficient of the traditions of the investor country while still maintaining their identity as Indians - this amalgamation making the best of the both worlds. If you are an ambitious IT professional and want to have a shooting career graph - come to the IT paradise in Bangalore and Chennai - where you will be assured of a world-class working environment and excellent pay package.

Kerala IT firm provides solution to Axis Bank

Axis Bank (formerly UTI Bank) has accepted a pricing and billing software solution prepared by Kerala's leading IT solutions company SunTec.

SunTec in a statement on Monday said it was happy that it could meet Axis Bank's expectations in time.

"With an ever-growing customer base like that of Axis Bank, it gets more challenging by the day to deliver consistent and personalised customer experience," said Nanda Kumar, CEO of SunTec.

The solution provided by SunTec would help Axis Bank to consolidate its billing and centralise and streamline pricing processes. The solution will also help Axis Bank create personalised product packages.

"SunTec's solution allowed us to consolidate all our home-grown billing processes. This improved our efficiency and we have deployed the solution in two separate phases for our current accounts, cash credit accounts and savings bank accounts. The implementation was remarkably quick," said Subhakanta Satpathy of Axis Bank.

The project began March 2007 and was completed December 2007.

Axis Bank is SunTec's second banking services client in India after ICICI Bank.

Axis Bank was among the first of the new private banks to begin operations in 1994, after the banking sector in India was thrown open to private players.
